The foundation for user involvement is based on different rationales an economic and consumerist discourse with the goal of cost effectivity through enhanced responsibility to the patients/users and a democratic discourse heeding the moral rights of the individual. Research indicates that focusing on the interaction process is one possible way of gaining in‐depth understanding of why user involvement in research is experienced as challenging, 9 and we thus wanted to study this interaction by bringing patient representatives and researchers together. ![]() Previous studies have focused on experiences from either users or researchers, 6, 7, 8 but we have not found any studies that have given users and researchers within health research the opportunity to discuss experiences on user involvement. 4, 5 This denotes a need to further investigate the impact of differences between researchers and users and how dissimilarities may influence their perception of what involvement is and how it should be carried out. Research indicates that one central challenge is power differences between users and researchers. 2, 3, 4Ĭollaboration between researchers and users in health research implies collaboration between persons with differing backgrounds, knowledge and experiences. 1 Although involving users is described as an ideal and in some countries a prerequisite for public funding, it has proved to be difficult. User involvement has broadly been defined as performing research “with” or “by” the public, rather than “on,” “about” or “for” the public. 275-295.User involvement in research has gradually increased in Western countries over the last two decades. 14), Emerald Group Publishing Limited, Bingley, pp. (Ed.) Interactions and Intersections of Gendered Bodies at Work, at Home, and at Play ( Advances in Gender Research, Vol. (2010), "Does age matter in sport: Differing experiences among women in rugby and martial arts", Texler Segal, M. Originality – This research presents an opportunity to explore age differences in sporting experiences, a topic whose coverage is limited in the literature. Future research should include a larger number of participants in an international sporting environment. In addition, only 30 participants were interviewed in Canada. Limitations – The research concentrated on only two contact sports, future research should be expanded. In terms of the body, several of the women in the older group did begin comparing their older body to their younger body, although all mentioned weight. Age also appears to influence women's perceptions about femininity being an issue for athletes. However, age may produce different perceptions about femininity in terms of gendered life stages. The sample consisted of 15 female rugby players and 15 female martial artists.įindings – In many ways, women in the younger and older groups have similar perceptions about the body and femininity. Methodology – A Standpoint Feminist approach was used through in-depth interviewing in a nonprobability purposive sample. The findings that I present here focus on the unique group of six female martial artists between the ages of 40 and 44 and the similarities and differences that emerged in comparison with the younger group of female rugby players and martial artists. Purpose – The purpose of this exploratory research study was to bring the experiences of women in contact sport to the forefront of the discussion of gender and sport.
